“A ham monument?” someone whispered as we approached the imposing structure. “They called it that because of all the naked warriors carved on it!”. Let me introduce you to the Gedenkkreuz deutscher Kriegsgefallener War memorial. This grand monument, with its 23-meter circumference of grey limestone, isn’t about glorifying nudity, though. It’s about remembering. This memorial, designed by Bernhard Frydag and inaugurated in 1909, was originally dedicated to the soldiers from Münster who died in the 19th-century Wars of German Unification. The warriors, lions, torches, and wreaths carved into the stone all speak to a time when Germany was forged through conflict. Interestingly, the city already had the Trauernde Germania, a monument specifically for the fallen soldiers of the 13th Infantry Regiment. The Gedenkkreuz deutscher Kriegsgefallener, however, aimed for a broader message of unity and national identity. Over the years, the monument has seen its share of opinions. While some praised it, calling it one of the best war memorials in Germany, others found it… provocative, hence the nickname. It even became part of an art installation in 1997, enclosed within a wooden wall and circled by a carousel.
