Gazing across Halfway, can you envision it as a quaint village? Halfway wasn’t always part of Glasgow’s urban sprawl. It once stood as a separate entity, a small village straddling the border between Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire. The name “Halfway” itself speaks to its historical location, precisely equidistant between Glasgow and Paisley, three miles from each. Locals even called it “Halfwayhouse”, or “Taigh Letheach Slighe” in Scottish Gaelic. Imagine stagecoaches rumbling along the dusty road, pausing at Halfway for weary travelers to rest and horses to be changed. This crucial stopping point contributed to Halfway’s development. By the mid-20th century, Halfway had grown significantly. The expansion of Glasgow eventually enveloped Halfway along with neighboring villages like Cardonald, Hillington, and Crookston in 1926. This led to renaming many local roads to avoid confusion with existing Glasgow streets. Today, little remains of the original village, lost amidst the urban development that lines the busy road connecting Glasgow and Paisley. Two cemeteries now mark the boundaries of Halfway: Craigton Cemetery to the north, watched over by the imposing Moss Heights apartments, and Cardonald Cemetery to the south, bordering the Mosspark neighborhood.
