Have you ever felt the stillness of a hidden pond? Welcome to Doleful Pond. Nestled within the Middlesex Fells Reservation this small body of water holds a surprising amount of history. Doleful Pond is one of several ponds within the Fells. It’s only 5.7 acres but it’s a significant part of this vast 2575-acre area.
The Fells themselves have a rich past. Long before European settlers arrived Native Americans used the area. They even created tool workshops utilizing the volcanic rock formations. Imagine the echoes of their lives surrounding Doleful Pond centuries ago. Later local farmers harnessed the power of Spot Pond Brook operating mills in the 1700s and 1800s. You can still see traces of those spillways today. Nearby there was even a short-lived silver mine around Spot Pond Brook in the late 1800s. Now covered by concrete it’s a secret beneath the earth.
The land surrounding Doleful Pond was mostly used for agriculture and timber. In the late 1800s a rubber factory village called Haywardville sprang up near Spot Pond Brook. It was a bustling hub of activity quite a change from the quiet of Doleful Pond itself. In 1892 Ms. Fannie Tudor donated the Virginia Woods to the Trustees of Reservations in memory of her daughter. This generous act sparked the creation of the Middlesex Fells Reservation in 1894. This decision transformed the area protecting it for future generations.
After the reservation’s creation a flock of sheep temporarily grazed in Sheepfold a former pasture area near Doleful Pond. They were there to help maintain the open meadow. The sheep were later removed for a trolley line. The trolley line that once ran near Doleful Pond. The old trolley bridge still stands a testament to this past era. Doleful Pond continues to play a quiet role in this complex history. It is a place of contrasts. A small and serene pond within a larger system of land and water reflecting centuries of change.
