A century of hope echoes within these walls. Welcome to The Salvation Army Church in Colombo. Right here in the heart of Colombo’s bustling Central Business District stands this significant landmark. It’s more than just a church it’s a haven a testament to faith and resilience.

The Salvation Army’s presence in Sri Lanka began on January 26 1883. Captain William Gladwin held the first open-air meeting near Colombo’s clock tower in Pettah. From those humble beginnings The Salvation Army has grown. It now serves Sri Lanka through numerous corps and community centers.

Arnolis Weerasooriya a young Trinity College teacher became the first Sinhalese Salvationist. His dedication helped establish The Salvation Army throughout the island. Weerasooriya rose to become a Colonel his influence extending beyond Sri Lanka’s shores. Sadly he died young from cholera. He’s buried in Mumbai.

The Salvation Army’s Territorial Headquarters compound is a remarkable complex. It houses a three-story THQ building. There are also two hostels for young women from rural areas. The Hope House a large community center is also here. It includes a school a daycare center and a physiotherapy unit. The Western Divisional Headquarters and apartments for THQ officers are here too. This triangular compound is a well-known city landmark. Colombo Central Corps one of eight corps in Greater Colombo is within this compound. This vibrant corps focuses on prayer and outreach. It has a band songsters a worship ensemble and many young people.

In 2015 The Salvation Army’s South Asia Zonal conference was held here. General André Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox attended. Salvationists and young people presented a cultural program showcasing Sri Lankan music dance and cuisine.

The Salvation Army’s work is multifaceted. It includes feeding and education programs safe water wells and livelihood development projects. These are especially important in rural areas. The Salvation Army also provides residential services. They offer comprehensive welfare care. They provide a safe haven for those in need. The Haven and Sunshine Home in Colombo is a key example. It provides a safe loving and learning environment for up to 100 women babies children and teenage girls at risk. It helps equip residents for a more stable future.

Colonel Rohini Hettiarachchi a former resident of The Haven is a testament to the home’s impact. Now Territorial President of Women’s Ministries in India’s South Western Territory she remembers her childhood there fondly.
