Here stands the Denkmal Gustav Hartmann a tribute to a remarkable man. This monument honors Gustav Hartmann known as the Iron Gustav a Berlin cab driver. He wasn’t just any cabbie. Gustav was legendary.

In 1885 he started his own carriage company the Wannseedroschken in Wannsee. He wasn’t content with simply driving fares. He saw the rise of automobiles threatening his livelihood. His response was bold. Incredibly bold.

On April 2 1928 he embarked on a journey from Berlin to Paris. Not by car but by horse-drawn carriage. His trusty steed Grasmus accompanied him on this 1000 kilometer adventure. A journalist Hans Hermann Theobald documented this incredible trip. The journey was a statement. A protest against the decline of the horse-drawn carriage industry.

Gustav arrived in Paris on June 4 1928. He wasn’t just stubborn. He was determined. His feat earned him international fame. He proved what a man and his horse could do. This extraordinary journey is not just a story of perseverance. It’s a story of defiance in the face of change.

After returning to Berlin Gustav established the Gustav-Hartmann-Stiftung. This foundation supported the families of taxi drivers who died on the job. His story was immortalized in Hans Fallada’s novel Der Eiserne Gustav. The book was translated into many languages. It also inspired films starring Heinz Rühmann and Gustav Knuth.

Despite the legend depicted in Fallada’s work Hartmann wasn’t against motor vehicles entirely. He actually owned a taxi during his Paris journey. The monument itself stands as a testament to his spirit. It’s a reminder of a unique chapter in Berlin’s history a man who refused to be forgotten. A man who proved even a horse could travel across borders. A man of courage and compassion. The Iron Gustav.
