Could these walls whisper tales of faith enduring through centuries? This is Chiesa dei Santi Primo e Feliciano in Leggiuno. It stands as a testament to time and devotion.

This church dates back to the 9th century. A Carolingian vassal named Eremberto built the original structure near the pieve of Leggiuno. This secured Milanese control over the coast of Lake Maggiore. Imagine Eremberto carefully selecting this site.

Later the building was rebuilt. Eremberto’s tombstone served as the altar’s mensa. It was rediscovered during a 1920 restoration. Now it is set into the presbytery’s eastern wall.

The Romanesque bell tower is thought to be from the 11th century. It is crafted from stone. Irregular single and double windows punctuate the bell chamber’s four sides. Picture the bells echoing across the landscape for centuries.

In the 17th century the facade was updated with a portal. Ancient materials were used perhaps from Roman Mediolanum. Two Proconnesian marble columns support capitals also of Proconnesian marble. These date back to the 5th or 6th century. Consider the journey these stones have taken.

Between the nave and presbytery three slabs from a Roman sarcophagus act as a screen. This sarcophagus once held Caius Iulius Grattianus. The inscription begins with a dedication to the spirits of the dead. It is an arcaded architectural style. Two eagles hold a festoon. The sides show signs of early medieval alterations. A fleur-de-lis was added.

To the right of the Chiesa dei Santi Primo e Feliciano facade stands a large funerary altar of Musso marble. The renowned archaeologist Theodor Mommsen documented it. It commemorates Lucius Virius Frontinus a pontifex from Mediolanum. His son Lucius Virius Vinicianus erected it. Another altar bears an inscription dedicating it to Lucius Virius Vinicianus’ beloved wife Caesia Ortensia. Both altars date from the late 2nd to early 3rd century AD. Imagine the lives of those commemorated here.

Fragments of two altars dedicated to Jupiter are embedded in the building’s exterior.

Inside the Chiesa dei Santi Primo e Feliciano is a single-nave building. It features ribbed cross vaults in two bays. A pointed arch rests on pilasters dividing the space. Envision the play of light within.

A 17th-century fresco on the back wall creates the illusion of an altar. At the center the Madonna and Child appear with Saints Primo and Feliciano. To their sides Saint Charles Borromeo and Saint John the Baptist are painted in faux niches. The fresco is dated 1633.

On the presbytery’s side wall a painting from 1488 depicts the Nativity. It is signed by Joannes Bernardinus de Laveno. In the lower section are three saints Primo Cyrus and S. Feliciano. They are accompanied by the noble coats of arms of the patrons.

Chiesa dei Santi Primo e Feliciano stands not only as a religious site. It is a mosaic of history art and enduring faith. Its stones whisper stories of Romans Carolingians and Renaissance artists. It honors Saints Primo and Feliciano whose names echo through the ages.
