Is it possible that a district could embody an entire region? The Bezirk Hallein does exactly that. It is virtually synonymous with the Tennengau. This political district in Salzburg, Austria, spans 668.35 square kilometers. It is an area rich in history and natural beauty.

Let’s delve into the story of Bezirk Hallein. Imagine it is the mid-19th century. Austria is transforming. In 1848, Salzburg became its own crown land. This change brought a new constitution. It also reorganized the way the land was managed. The Bezirk Hallein’s story is intertwined with these reforms.

Before 1896, the area now known as Bezirk Hallein was part of Salzburg-Umgebung. This larger district became unwieldy. In 1895, officials decided to create a new district to ease the burden. The Bezirkshauptmannschaft Hallein was established a year later. This marked the formal beginning of Bezirk Hallein as we know it today.

The Bezirk Hallein is nestled between Flachgau to the north and Pongau to the south. Its landscape is diverse. The area includes mountains and valleys. The Salzach River also flows through it.

Administratively, the Bezirk Hallein is divided into 13 municipalities. Among these are Hallein, a town, and four market towns. These are Abtenau, Golling an der Salzach, Kuchl and Oberalm. The remaining municipalities include Adnet and Annaberg-Lungötz. Bad Vigaun and Krispl are also part of the Bezirk Hallein. Puch bei Hallein and Rußbach am Paß Gschütt round out the list. So does St. Koloman and Scheffau am Tennengebirge.

Each of these communities has its own unique character. They all contribute to the Bezirk Hallein’s overall identity. As of January 1, 2024, the Bezirk Hallein was home to 61,687 people. This population is spread across the district. This results in a population density of about 92 people per square kilometer.

Over the years, the Bezirk Hallein has seen its share of leaders. Rudolf Graf von Thun und Hohenstein served as Bezirkshauptmann from 1896 to 1900. Adalbert Proschko followed. Anton Herget and Hans von Rittinger also held the position. Karl Dirolt and Wilfried Watteck shaped the district. Rudolf Dworzak and Viktor Renner guided the Bezirk Hallein through challenging times. Walter Königsdorfer led during the war years. After the war, Theodor Salzmann took over. Hubert Weninger and Arno Reischenböck continued the work. Alfred John and Klaus Dieter Aigner led the Bezirk Hallein into the 21st century. Helmut Fürst served until 2023. Since June 1, 2023, Monika Vogl has been the Bezirkshauptfrau.

The Bezirk Hallein stands as a testament to Salzburg’s rich history. Its story is one of evolution and adaptation. It is also a region that has maintained its unique identity. As you explore the Bezirk Hallein, remember that you are walking through a place where history and nature intertwine.
