In 1983, a seed of change was planted in San Diego’s Jewish community. Rabbi Ron Herstik established Congregation Dor Hadash, the first and still only Reconstructionist Jewish presence in the county. Congregation Dor Hadash, meaning “New Generation,” aimed to create a dynamic, evolving form of Judaism, embracing tradition while adapting to the modern world. They envisioned a community that extended beyond the traditional synagogue walls. This vision led to the creation of havurot, small groups formed around shared interests, fostering deep connections within the larger congregation. Congregation Dor Hadash’s affiliation with the Reconstructionist movement provided a framework for this innovative approach, blending ancient Jewish practices with the realities of contemporary life. This wasn’t just about observing holidays; it was about building a living, breathing community. Congregation Dor Hadash actively engages in intergenerational programs, connecting teens with seniors through the “Gen Pals” program, while B’yachad celebrations bring all ages together. This community embraces diversity, welcoming singles, families, LGBTQ+ individuals, interracial and interfaith couples, and families from all walks of life. Congregation Dor Hadash remains a vital part of San Diego’s Jewish landscape. They offer a place for those seeking a progressive, relevant expression of their Jewish identity.
