High above Ober-Rosbach and Pfaffenwiesbach stands the Steinkopf a prominent hill in the Taunus mountain range. This isn’t just any hill. The Steinkopf holds a fascinating history. It’s more than 500 meters above sea level. Its height makes it a landmark visible from afar. The Steinkopf is one of the five independent summits in the Taunus. That makes it truly special.
For centuries the Steinkopf witnessed history unfold. The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes a Roman border fortification ran along its western slopes. Three small forts Kleinkastell were positioned nearby. One was at Kaisergrube. Two were near the Kuhkopf another hill in the Steinkopf massif. These forts offer a glimpse into Roman military strategy. The Romans even mined lead and silver on the Steinkopf. This mining activity continued into the 19th century.
Since 1949 part of the Steinkopf served as a military area. Initially the United States Armed Forces used it. The Bundeswehr the German Armed Forces took over in 1997. An ammunition depot was established on the southwestern flank. A large training area was designated on the north side. Only a small portion was actually used for training. Interestingly a part of this area now functions as a Special Area of Conservation.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the Steinkopf is its telecommunication tower. Standing 105.35 meters tall this tower is a modern marvel. Built in 1972 it initially served as a TV transmitter. Today it primarily functions as a directional and mobile radio system. On a clear day you can see it from far away. The tower’s view extends across the Wetterau even reaching the Vogelsberg mountains.
A curious aspect of the Steinkopf involves a possible impact crater. Researchers from the University of Marburg suggest a meteorite may have struck nearby. The Fahrenbach valley resembles an impact crater. However geological analysis didn’t confirm this theory. The quartzite rocks show typical orogenic deformations not impact metamorphism. Nevertheless the mystery remains a tantalizing piece of Steinkopf’s story.
