Didn’t schools always have the feel of a community hub? Today we’re standing before the Wohnprojekt Südstadtschule. This is not just any building, it’s a former school thoughtfully transformed into a vibrant community housing project.

The Wohnprojekt Südstadtschule stands on the grounds of a heritage-protected school. This school once served visually impaired students. After the school relocated, a new vision took shape. Sixteen residential units, three offices, and a children’s library now occupy this space.

From 2009 to 2012, the transformation took place. Architects Mosaik Architekten BDA and planW Organisations- und Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH collaborated. Together they breathed new life into the old school. The flat floor plans of the Wohnprojekt Südstadtschule were carefully designed with the future residents.

The conversion wasn’t without its challenges. Preserving the historical heritage was paramount. Also, the gymnasium’s unique structure needed clever solutions. The architects created four adjacent houses. These resemble semi-detached homes. The former schoolyard now serves as the green heart. All apartments face this communal space.

The buildings meet the KfW 70 standard. This was achieved through thermal bridges and a decentralized ventilation system. Heat recovery is a key feature. The building complex stands at Krausenstraße and Schlägerstraße. It now houses a close-knit community. The ensemble includes four building sections. They house individual apartments ranging from 40 to 180 square meters.

The former classroom and administration building has three floors. It provides new homes for singles, couples, and families. To the southeast is the former entrance hall. Here, you’ll find Kurt Sohns’ wall relief “Das schwarze Auge.” It’s also home to the children’s library. Next door is the former caretaker’s residence. It now serves as the planW office. The gymnasium was cleverly divided into four townhouses. Along Krausenstraße, there are four apartments and two offices.

The inner courtyard is a green oasis. Towering trees create a meeting point. Residents can often be found here. In 2011, modern living became a reality in this historic building. The Wohnprojekt Südstadtschule faced unique challenges. Its architecture garnered awards. These include the KfW Award for Building and Living 2012. It also received the BDA Prize Lower Saxony 2012. The community-focused approach also won recognition. It received the Architecture Prize of the Concrete Industry. This was in the category “Living in Community.”

The Wohnprojekt Südstadtschule is more than just a building. It’s a testament to community spirit. It blends historical preservation with modern living. As you explore the area, remember this unique project. It breathes new life into Hanover’s Südstadt district.
