Ever wondered how Botswana’s first institution of higher education came to be? The University of Botswana stands as a testament to a nation’s ambition and unity.

Established in 1982 the University of Botswana has grown into a multi-campus institution. It has campuses in Gaborone Francistown and Maun. The University of Botswana is divided into six faculties. These include Business Education Engineering Humanities Health Sciences Science and Social Sciences. The Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital is also part of the university.

But the story of the University of Botswana begins long before 1982. It started as part of the University of Bechuanaland Basotoland and Swaziland UBBS. This larger system was founded in 1964. Its goal was to reduce reliance on South African tertiary education during apartheid. After Botswana and Lesotho gained independence in 1966 the university became UBLS the University of Botswana Lesotho and Swaziland.

In 1975 Lesotho withdrew to create its own national university. Botswana then launched the One Man One Beast movement. This fundraising campaign aimed to build the Botswana campus. People contributed cash cattle grain and eggs. By 1982 the University of Botswana became a reality. Today a statue commemorates this movement near the new library.

The University of Botswana is more than just classrooms. Many students live in residence halls enjoying meals in campus refectories. Amenities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool an entertainment arena and sports courts. The university also offers a free medical clinic and counseling services.

The University of Botswana maintains global partnerships. These facilitate research and study exchanges. Partners include universities in the United States Europe Asia-Pacific and Africa. These collaborations enrich the university’s academic environment.

Notable alumni include former presidents Duma Boko and Seretse Khama Ian Khama. Other prominent graduates are Bogolo Kenewendo Mokgweetsi Masisi and Linah Moholo. These individuals have made significant contributions to Botswana and beyond.

The University of Botswana continues to shape future leaders. It is ranked among the top universities in sub-Saharan Africa. Its commitment to education is a shield protecting and empowering generations of Batswana. The University of Botswana stands as a symbol of Botswana’s journey. It reflects resilience unity and a dedication to knowledge.
