From Arnona’s heights you can see the Dead Sea. Can you believe it? This quiet Jerusalem neighborhood offers breathtaking views. Arnona isn’t just a pretty face though. It’s a place steeped in history. Established in the 1930s Arnona was one of Jerusalem’s first Jewish suburbs. Imagine life here back then. Arnona sits on land originally owned by the Keren HaEzra company. Richard Kauffmann designed its layout. A planned community from the start.

During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War Arnona was a front line. Arab forces occupied it briefly. Jewish forces fought back hard. A combined unit of the Hagana and Palmach retook the area. The 1949 ceasefire placed the border at Arnona’s eastern edge. This was part of the Green Line. A barbed wire fence was the only barrier. That changed with the Six-Day War in 1967. Arnona’s current borders solidified then.

Arnona is more than just its wartime history. It’s a neighborhood of contrasts. Secular and religious Jews live side by side. Families young professionals immigrants all call it home. Its diverse population reflects Jerusalem’s rich tapestry. Arnona boasts educational and cultural centers. The Torah and Avodah religious seminary is one. Binyanei Hauma a community center and concert hall is another. Arnona is also home to several parks and playgrounds. These provide green spaces for families to relax.

But Arnona also has its hidden gems. Did you know that a British Mandate cemetery is located here? Indian soldiers who fought with the British in World War I are buried there. Muslims Hindus and Sikhs are buried in separate sections. It’s a poignant reminder of Jerusalem’s layered history. The US Embassy’s move to Arnona in 2018 marked a significant event. The building was once the US Consulate General. Its relocation coincided with Israel’s 70th anniversary of independence. A significant event indeed. Archaeological discoveries near the US Embassy unearthed a large Iron Age II compound. This site served as a tax collection center dating back to the reigns of Hezekiah and Manasseh.

Arnona’s story is far from over. It continues to evolve. This peaceful suburban haven offers an affordable alternative to central Jerusalem. Yet it remains close to major attractions. The Israel Museum and Knesset are nearby. Arnona balances its historical significance with a vibrant modern life. It is a true microcosm of Jerusalem a city of contrasts and unending stories. This is Arnona. Remember it.
