Can you imagine a place where history whispers through stained glass windows and the echoes of a bygone era still resonate in the hallowed halls? Welcome to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, a magnificent edifice that stands proudly on Galle Road in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This architectural gem, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Scottish community, has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, its walls harboring tales of colonial rule, independence, and the enduring power of faith. Founded in the late 19th century, St. Andrew’s served as the central hub for the Scottish community in Colombo. The first Presbyterian church in Ceylon was built on Prince Street, Pettah, in 1841. It’s fascinating to know that the foundation stone was laid by the then governor, James Alexander Stewart-Mackenzie! After the turn of the century, however, the congregation dwindled. The church relocated to its present location in Colpetty, marking a new chapter in its journey. The foundation stone of the new church was laid in 1906 by Governor Sir Henry Arthur Blake. The building was designed by Edward Skinner, a Scottish architect, and constructed using wood and stone. The church boasts a beautiful tiled floor shaped like a cross and teak pews. Imagine the incredible journey of the stained glass windows, shipped from England in 1921, illuminating the sanctuary with stories of faith. The main chancel window depicts the Crucifixion, while the altar window features Saint Paul and Saint Andrew. The south transept window is dedicated to the troops of World War I, and the west window, dedicated to Rev. Alexander Dunn, depicts the Ascension of Christ. What makes St. Andrew’s even more special is its operational pipe organ, a rare find in Sri Lanka. The church embraces its heritage: While the congregation has evolved, the church continues to be a place of worship for people from various backgrounds, maintaining an English-speaking Protestant tradition. The story of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church is more than just a history of brick and mortar. It’s a story about resilience, adaptation, and the enduring power of faith in a changing world. As you stand before this majestic house of worship, you’ll feel the echoes of its past, and you’ll sense the spirit of community that continues to thrive within its walls.
