Is this the famed “New Theatre” of Sri Lanka? You’re standing right before it, the Navarangahala. Constructed between 1966 and 1969, this architectural gem was initially known as the Royal Primary School Hall. The Navarangahala was a groundbreaking achievement for Sri Lankan performing arts. Before its construction, local artists relied on open-air amphitheaters or makeshift venues. Designed to accommodate traditional drama and music, adhering to the principles of Natya Shastra, the Navarangahala boasts a unique open-air type auditorium. This structure, with a seating capacity of 1,500, has witnessed countless memorable performances and events. It even briefly housed the House of Representatives in 1972 for the momentous finalization of the Republic Constitution. It’s amazing to think that this grand hall, now under the custodianship of Royal College, almost wasn’t built! Funding came from both government coffers and public donations. The Navarangahala stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of Sri Lankan artistry.
