On a bustling Colombo street corner, in 1873, stood the first Town Hall, a neo-gothic marvel designed by J. G. Smither. It was a symbol of the city’s burgeoning municipality, freshly empowered by the Municipalities Ordinance of 1865. Yet, as the 20th century dawned, this grand structure, with its minarets and arches, proved too small for Colombo’s growing ambitions. The city needed a new Town Hall, a symbol of its progress and stature. World War I delayed these plans, but the dream didn’t die. Finally, on May 24, 1924, Mayor Thomas Reid laid the foundation stone for the new Town Hall, Colombo. The design, chosen through an international competition, was a neoclassical masterpiece by S. J. Edwards, echoing the grandeur of Washington D.C.’s Capitol Building. It was no accident that this new Town Hall, Colombo, overlooked the verdant expanse of Viharamahadevi Park, then known as Victoria Park. This location, suggested by the renowned town planner Patrick Geddes, placed the building at the heart of the prestigious Cinnamon Gardens. Four years later, on May 2, 1928, Governor Sir Herbert Stanley inaugurated the Town Hall, Colombo. It was hailed as the finest municipal building in the Eastern Hemisphere. Look closely at the Town Hall, Colombo. Those towering 38-foot Corinthian columns flanking the porch, the imposing central dome housing the council chamber, and the blend of Tuscan and composite styles throughout speak to its architectural richness. Inside, the original doors, windows, and ornamental lamps still grace the building, whispering tales of nearly a century of history. Although renovations have touched the interior, the council chamber, with its original furniture and lamps, remains largely untouched. Even today, as you stand before the Town Hall, Colombo, you stand before a testament to Colombo’s enduring spirit, a place where the city’s past and present converge.
