From humble beginnings to a vibrant hub, the Brisbane Sikh Temple’s story is one of community and resilience. The Brisbane Sikh Temple stands as a testament to the dedication of the Sikh community in Brisbane. Their journey began over fifty years ago, long before this impressive structure graced Logan Road. Imagine a small group of families gathering at the Camp Hill School of Arts in 1981. This marked the beginning of their organized religious congregation. A year later, they moved to a rented hall at the Blind Welfare Association in Woolloongabba. Every second Sunday, families would bring langar from their homes. Karah Parsaad, a sacred pudding, was prepared on-site. After the Parkaash of Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji, the Sikh holy book, and the recitation of Japujee Sahib, a morning prayer, the community shared the langar together. The dream of having their own Gurdwara Sahib, a Sikh place of worship, began to take shape. In 1988, the community embarked on a significant step: acquiring land for their own temple. On Baisakhi day, a major Sikh festival, the foundation stone was laid by the Panj Piaraas, five beloved ones. By December 1988, the Brisbane Sikh Temple at 2679 Logan Road was complete, a beacon of faith and community. The Brisbane Sikh Temple has grown significantly since its inception. Particularly after 2008, a wave of new community members arrived in Brisbane. Today, the Brisbane Sikh Temple is open seven days a week. It serves as a hub, not just for religious practices, but for the entire Sikh community in Southeast Queensland. The Brisbane Sikh Temple’s future is bright. Beyond religious services, it aims to nurture future generations. They strive to pass down the cherished values and knowledge of Sikhism, ensuring its vibrant continuation in Brisbane.
