“Such vibrant colors, don’t you think?” Right before us stands the Red Mosque, also known as Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque. Its striking red and white candy-striped pattern immediately catches the eye. It is one of the oldest mosques in Colombo and a beloved landmark. This architectural marvel isn’t just a feast for the eyes; it also has quite a story to tell. Built in 1909, it was commissioned by the local Indian Muslim community for their daily prayers and Friday Jummah. The mosque’s design is a unique blend of Indo-Islamic, Indian, Gothic Revival, and Neo-classical styles. What’s even more fascinating is that the mosque’s designer, Habibu Lebbe Saibu Lebbe, was an unlettered architect! He relied on images and details of Indo-Saracenic structures provided by South Indian traders. Many claim that sailors approaching the port of Colombo once used the Red Mosque as a landmark, its vibrant colors standing out against the cityscape. Imagine that, a beacon of faith guiding travelers from the sea! Today, this grand mosque continues to be a place of worship and a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Colombo.
