Beneath our feet lie the echoes of centuries. The Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned stands as a testament to Gibraltar’s layered past.

This very site was once home to Gibraltar’s chief mosque. Following the Christian reconquest in 1462, it was transformed into a Roman Catholic church. The Catholic Monarchs ordered the mosque to be stripped of its Islamic elements. It was then consecrated as a parish church. It was named Santa Maria la Coronada y San Bernardo.

But that wasn’t the end of the story for the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned. Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II decided the old building should be replaced. They erected a new church in the Gothic style. Take a closer look at the cathedral’s small courtyard. It is a remnant of the larger Moorish court of the mosque. The Catholic Monarchs’ coat of arms is still visible here today.

The church of St. Mary the Crowned holds a unique distinction. It was the only Catholic institution spared during the 1704 takeover of Gibraltar. Its pastor Juan Romero bravely protected it. Catholic worship has continued here uninterrupted since the Christian reconquest.

The Great Siege of Gibraltar caused significant damage from 1779 to 1783. In 1790, Governor Sir Robert Boyd offered to rebuild the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned. In return, he requested part of the land. This allowed him to reroute Main Street. The street was remodeled in 1801. The clock tower was added in 1820. Restoration work in 1931 gave the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned its current west facade.

The history of the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned is filled with dramatic events. In 1881, nearly fifty arrests occurred. This happened when the governor sent police to support Bishop Canilla’s entry into his own church. A group tried to install their own priest against the will of the governor and the Catholic Church.

Until the 19th century, people who died in Gibraltar could be buried under the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned floor. Bishops are buried in a crypt beneath the statue of Our Lady of Europe.

The Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned played a role on the world stage in 1943. Władysław Sikorski’s coffin lay in state here. His plane crashed into the sea near Gibraltar.

Today, the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned stands as a symbol of faith and resilience. Its walls have witnessed centuries of change. It is a testament to Gibraltar’s rich and complex history.
