Did you know that Kloster Sankt Lioba started in a hospital? It’s true. In 1920 sisters from the newly opened St Hedwigs Children’s Hospital formed a community. They wanted to live by the Rule of Saint Benedict. They chose the name St Lioba a relative and missionary companion of Saint Boniface.

This wasn’t just any convent. These sisters weren’t cloistered. Their work included pastoral care. They also provided healthcare and education. This is why you see them involved in so much. They weren’t secluded. They served their community.

Their initial space proved too small. Then came a stroke of luck. Villa Wohlgemuth in Günterstal went on sale. This stunning villa was built between 1906 and 1913. It was designed by the Heidelberg architect Fritz Seitz. It’s a magnificent example of Tuscan villa architecture. The interior was originally adorned with frescoes painted by the owner’s brother. Many of these frescoes are still preserved though mostly covered today.

In 1927 the sisters’ community received papal recognition as a congregation of Benedictine nuns. They moved into Villa Wohlgemuth. After minor renovations the villa became the motherhouse of the Congregation of Benedictine Nuns of Saint Lioba. This incredible building is the heart of the monastery. The central atrium now serves as the convent’s oratory a beautiful house chapel.

Even more fascinating is the history of a small building nearby called Haus Subiaco. Since 2001 it houses a memorial room dedicated to Edith Stein. Saint Edith Stein a patron saint of Europe was a frequent guest here between 1925 and 1934. She described the villa as a ‘locked paradise’ before the sisters acquired it. It’s inspiring to think of the spiritual giants who once graced these walls.

Today Kloster Sankt Lioba is a vibrant community. Forty Benedictine nuns along with sixteen Dominican nuns from the dissolved Kloster Neusatzeck live here. The complex includes outbuildings gardens a guesthouse a monastery shop a biblical garden and a small convent cemetery. The bell cast in 1928 by the Grünger bell foundry still rings out. It calls the nuns to prayer and worship. It’s a wonderful reminder of the centuries of faith and service. It shows the enduring spirit of this remarkable place. Kloster Sankt Lioba is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith community and service.
