What if I told you there was an artist whose work was so revolutionary, it was initially deemed too avant-garde for 1940s Quebec? Right here in Montreal, Alfred Pellan, a Quebec-born painter, muralist, illustrator, and costume designer, shook the foundations of the Canadian art world. Alfred Pellan, born in 1906, spent his formative years in Paris. He returned to a conservative French Canada, bringing revolutionary ideas about modern art. He drew inspiration from Cubism and Surrealism. Alfred Pellan embraced an eclectic approach to painting. He fought to liberate art from dogmatic thinking. His early works, often still lifes with a touch of academic Cubism, reveal influences from Picasso and Matisse. Upon his return from Paris, Alfred Pellan brought back a collection of Cubist and Surrealist works. Sadly, they were deemed too radical for the then-conservative Quebec art scene, and few pieces sold. To make a living, Alfred Pellan became a professor at the Montreal School of Fine Arts from 1943 to 1952. During this time, his style matured. He delved into Surrealism, his imagery becoming more erotic. His paintings grew in size, complexity, and texture. He illustrated poetry collections and designed costumes and sets for theatrical productions. Alfred Pellan’s work with the theater included unforgettable costume and set designs for “Madeleine et Pierre” and Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”. Alfred Pellan challenged the established norms, believing that art should be free from ideology. He was a key figure in Prisme d’Yeux, a group of artists advocating for freedom of expression in art. Alfred Pellan also became the first Canadian to exhibit at the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris. His work later gained recognition in Quebec and Canada following a Paris exhibition. Alfred Pellan’s artistry extended to murals. He created a mural for the Canadian Embassy in Rio de Janeiro. He also created stunning glass murals for the Place des Arts concert hall and Saint-Théophile Church in Laval-Ouest. These public works shaped the urban landscape and made his art accessible to a wider audience. Despite the initial resistance, Alfred Pellan left an indelible mark on Canadian art. He was a pioneer of modernism, a “prophet and creator”. His Paris-inspired work acted as a catalyst, stirring Quebec from its cultural slumber. He received the Paul-Émile Borduas Prize in 1984, ironically named after a former rival, recognizing his dynamic contribution to arts education, his fight for artistic freedom, and his internationally acclaimed works. Alfred Pellan, a true visionary, defied categorization. He was a master of various mediums, constantly seeking a visual language free from constraints. His legacy is one of artistic freedom and a passionate pursuit of beauty.
