“What was the only church in Saigon that remained open during the Communist reign?” That’s a question many have pondered. Right here stands Grace Baptist Church. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. Founded in 1962 by IMB worker Sam James, Grace Baptist has faced war and trials.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Saigon in 1975. The city is on the brink of change. Many churches closed. Grace Baptist remained a beacon of hope. Pastor Le Quoc Chanh made a brave decision. He chose to stay with his flock. He refused to abandon them during those uncertain times.

Before 1975 Grace Baptist shared space with another church. A generous Lottie Moon Christmas Offering grant changed everything. The church secured its own property. It gained financial and congregational independence. This proved crucial during the difficult years ahead.

Sam James had to leave Saigon because of Communist control. All Baptist churches closed except one. Grace Baptist Church continued its services. James called those times “dark times”. Yet the church persevered.

Fast forward to 2013. French McLemore, associate pastor from Oklahoma, visited Ho Chi Minh City. Born in Saigon, he left just before its fall. Seeing Grace Baptist Church surprised him. He thought it was a remnant of the past. He soon discovered it was a thriving community.

McLemore learned about Sam James’ role. He read James’ book “Servant on the Edge of History”. He felt compelled to meet him. McLemore’s church has since sent teams to Vietnam multiple times. He befriended the Vietnamese pastor of Grace Baptist Church.

Grace Baptist celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was a joyous occasion. Vietnamese Baptists, former missionaries, and visitors gathered. Government officials also attended. Pastor Chanh, though elderly, was present. His son, Huy, now serves as associate pastor.

In 2008 the Vietnam Baptist Convention was formed. It gained official recognition. This allows them to start churches and train leaders. They also publish materials. They meet human needs in Jesus’ name.

Today Grace Baptist Church stands as a symbol. It represents unwavering faith. It shows the power of community. It is a testament to those who stayed. They stayed when others left. The church has impacted the whole country. It grew out of Southern Baptist missionary work. The work began in Vietnam in the late 1950s. Though missionaries left in 1975, their work continued to grow. Baptists are now among the fastest-growing church groups in Vietnam.

Remember Grace Baptist Church. It is more than just a building. It is a story of survival. It is a legacy of faith. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of belief.
