In 1918 Aimee Semple McPherson an evangelist felt God’s call to establish a church in booming Los Angeles. Five years later in 1923 her vision became reality. The Angelus Temple opened its doors. Aimee passionately preached four core beliefs: Jesus as Savior Baptizer with the Holy Spirit Healer and Soon-Coming King. These tenets formed the foundation of the Foursquare Church.
The temple wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a beacon of hope during times of poverty and social unrest. Aimee led countless city-wide initiatives supporting the hungry homeless and marginalized. This legacy of service continues to this day. The Angelus Temple celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023.
The building itself is stunning. Its 125-foot-wide dome once the largest in North America is a breathtaking sight. The interior is equally impressive. A sky-blue dome adorned with fluffy clouds creates a sense of celestial wonder. Eight stained-glass windows depict the life of Jesus. The Kimball pipe organ a source of comfort for Aimee still resonates within its walls. The temple originally seated 5300 people. Renovations in 1972 and 2002 altered the capacity but preserved its original charm.
Aimee’s ministry extended beyond the pulpit. She launched KFSG a radio station in 1924 broadcasting sermons and programs to a vast audience. The radio towers atop the temple became iconic symbols.
Today Angelus Temple continues its mission. Led by senior pastor Matthew Barnett it remains a vibrant megachurch. It’s also closely linked to the Dream Center a non-profit organization offering extensive support to the underserved. The Angelus Temple and the Dream Center together are a force for positive change in Los Angeles.
