Is it possible for a church to have two birthdays? The Baptist Church in Accra, Ghana, does. It’s a story of double beginnings. Our tale begins in 1927 in Kumasi. Nigerian Baptist traders, longing for familiar hymns and sermons, established the first Baptist church there. This marked the first seed of the Baptist faith in Ghana. More churches sprouted up, forming the Yoruba Baptist Association in 1935. But there was a problem. The services were in Yoruba, leaving the local Ghanaians unable to understand. They appealed to the Nigerian Baptist Convention to send missionaries who could bridge the language gap. In 1947, Reverend and Mrs. H.R. Littleton arrived, ready to plant the seeds of faith in the hearts of Ghanaians. They established the first indigenous Baptist Church at Boamang in the Ashanti Region in 1952. Then in 1963, the Ghana Baptist Conference gained its autonomy. It was a true birth of a new Baptist identity, separate and distinct. It was renamed the Ghana Baptist Convention in 1964. This marked the second birthday of the Baptist Church, not a beginning, but a blossoming. The Baptist Church in Accra stands today as a testament to this dual heritage. It represents the faith brought by traders and nurtured by missionaries. It’s a church that speaks both Yoruba and Twi, a church deeply rooted in Ghanaian soil. It’s part of a larger family of 1,346 churches and almost 100,000 members, a beacon of faith in the bustling city of Accra. So, as you stand before the Baptist Church, remember its double birthday, a story of two beginnings, a story of growth, and a testament to the enduring power of faith.
