The Sportschule Potsdam Friedrich Ludwig Jahn is a Gesamtschule in Potsdam. It proudly carries the title “Eliteschule des Sports”. The DOSB awarded this honor to the school. The DFB also recognized it as an “Eliteschule des Fußballs”.
In 1952, Brandenburg an der Havel saw the birth of a children and youth sports school. In 1973, it moved to Potsdam. The school adopted the name of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. He is the “Turnvater” or father of German gymnastics.
Over 600 students honed their skills here. They focused on gymnastics, swimming, fencing, athletics, rowing, and canoeing. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, 29 students represented the DDR. They secured an impressive 31 medals.
After German reunification, the school faced closure. In 1991, the state of Brandenburg took over. The school had to reduce its focus on competitive sports.
Klaus Rüdiger Ziemer became headmaster in 1996. He transformed it back into a sports school. A close collaboration with 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam began. This partnership supported young female football talents. Since 2000, there has been cooperation with 1. VfL Potsdam.
Dr. Iris Gerloff took over as head in February 2017. In 2021, two school teams participated in the TV show “Luke! Die Schule und ich”.
Today, over 680 students attend this elite sports school. Around 400 live in the Haus der Athleten. They come from all over Germany. Many are from Brandenburg.
The Sportschule Potsdam earned several awards. In March 2001, it became an “Eliteschule des Sports”. The DOSB and Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe presented the award. In 2008 and 2018, the DOSB named it “Eliteschule des Jahres.” These awards recognized the achievements of the elite students.
In 2014, students achieved remarkable success. They stood on the winner’s podium 20 times at international championships. They won twelve gold medals. Laura Lindemann was honored as “Eliteschülerin des Sports” by the DOSB.
The Sportschule Potsdam collaborates with 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam since 1995. This partnership produced many Bundesliga and national players. In December 2007, the DFB recognized the school. It became the first elite football school exclusively for female talents.
The Sportschule Potsdam offers an additive Abitur. It is the first German school to do so. Students can spread their Abitur exams over three years. This helps them balance school and sports.
Since 2019, the school participates in “medienfit_sek I”. This program helps schools navigate the digital world. In September 2019, the school launched a pilot project. It used the Schul-Cloud of Brandenburg.
Many famous athletes attended the Sportschule Potsdam. Birgit Fischer, Britta Steffen, and Sebastian Brendel are among them. They achieved greatness in their respective sports.
