Mountain Box marks a left-hand bend. It comes right after the Mountain Mile. The Mountain Mile stretches 1.3 miles. That is about 2.09 kilometers. It runs between the 27th and 29th Milestone markers.

The A18 Snaefell Mountain Road wasn’t always here. It evolved from older roads and paths in the 1800s. The Disaforesting Commission of 1860 played a key role. They created a graded section from Park Lewellyn to Keppel Gate. The Mountain Mile and Mountain Box became part of it.
The Mountain Box area has seen changes over time. Once, sheep-gates stood here. These controlled livestock. The East Snaefell Mountain sheep-gate was removed in 1934. This made way for faster races.
Imagine life before cars. The Mountain Mile was part of the Highland Course. It was also part of the Four Inch Course. These were used for early car races like the Gordon Bennett Trial. The Tourist Trophy car races also took place here. These races occurred between 1904 and 1922. The TT races started in 1911. The Manx Grand Prix races started in 1923.
