Could this be the final resting place for generations to come? Here at the Montefiore Cemetery, the legacy of countless lives intertwines with the peaceful Pennsylvania landscape. Montefiore Cemetery stands as a testament to Jewish history and heritage in the United States. Established in 1910, it was initially known as “Mt. Lebanon Cemetery”. However, the name was soon changed to honor Sir Moses Montefiore, a prominent 19th-century British philanthropist and Zionist. The cemetery was founded by a trio of visionaries: Oscar Sprissler, M.D., George F. Murray, and Frank H. Danenhour, Esq. They purchased a fifty-acre farm with a dream of creating a sacred space. The cemetery’s story is also woven with the threads of family dedication. What began as a partnership eventually saw Joseph Goldstein emerge as the managing partner. Over time, the cemetery flourished, embraced by numerous synagogues and organizations that secured sections for their members. Today, Montefiore Cemetery spans approximately seventy acres, encompassing land in both Abington Township and Rockledge Borough. It stands as a poignant reminder of the rich tapestry of life, loss, and remembrance, echoing with the stories of generations past.
