“Courageous, the hour is near suffer for God.” These words perhaps echoed in the halls of The Congregation of The Lovers of The Holy Cross Khiet Tam. The story of this congregation intertwines deeply with the history of Christianity in Vietnam. It all began with a vision and a French bishop named Pierre Lambert de la Motte.
The Congregation of The Lovers of The Holy Cross Khiet Tam finds its roots in the 17th century. Bishop Lambert de la Motte, a missionary, founded it in 1670. His aim was to create a religious community specifically for Vietnamese women. Each congregation operates independently. However, they all recognize Bishop Lambert de la Motte as their founder. They follow the Lambertian Spirituality. It emphasizes the crucified Christ.
Bishop Lambert de la Motte was born in France in 1624. He felt drawn to religious life early on. He was inspired to gather those who loved the Holy Cross of Jesus. This inspiration came from “The Imitation of Christ”. He envisioned them forming a congregation named “Lovers of the Holy Cross.”
After becoming a priest and then a bishop, Lambert de la Motte journeyed to Southeast Asia. He arrived in Thailand in 1662. Persecutions in Vietnam prevented him from going there directly. He chose Juthia in Thailand as a base for missionary work.
In 1670, a pivotal year, Bishop Lambert officially founded the Lovers of the Holy Cross. This order was for women who took vows. The Vatican approved it and it continues to this day. The first two sisters, Anna and Paula, professed their vows on Ash Wednesday. This marked the official founding date.
The Lovers of the Holy Cross had specific duties. They were to pray for the conversion. They also had to educate young women. Caring for the sick was another important task. They baptized children in emergencies. They helped women return to a dignified life.
Bishop Angelo Palmas said something very significant. He stated that it is impossible to write the history of Christianity in Vietnam without writing the history of the Lovers of the Holy Cross. Their story is interwoven.
Bishop Lambert de la Motte passed away in Thailand in 1676. His health had declined. Yet, his legacy lived on. The Lovers of the Holy Cross continued to grow. They endured trials. Vocations increased. His love for Christ crucified inspired the creation of the religious institute.
Today, The Congregation of The Lovers of The Holy Cross Khiet Tam stands as a testament. It shows the enduring faith and service. It reflects the ideals of its founder. It embodies the spirit of those first sisters who dedicated their lives. The sacrifices that they made helped shape the religious landscape of Vietnam.
