Ever wonder about the story behind a name? Here at Rotary Field, the name itself offers a glimpse into a world of service, ethics, and international goodwill.

Rotary Field reminds us of the organization called Rotary. Rotary is a worldwide network. It is made up of business and professional people. They unite to provide humanitarian service. They encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. They help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The Rotary story began in Chicago in 1905. Paul P. Harris, a lawyer, wanted to create a professional club. He wanted it to have the same friendly spirit he knew in small towns. The name Rotary came from the practice of rotating meetings. Members met in each other’s offices.

Rotary’s popularity quickly spread. By 1921, clubs existed on six continents. In 1922, the organization became Rotary International.

The Rotary flag is white. It features the Rotary wheel emblem in gold. The wheel has blue spaces on the rim. The words Rotary and International are also in gold. The first official Rotary flag flew in Kansas City in 1915.

The wheel emblem symbolizes Rotary. Early designs showed a simple wagon wheel. It had lines suggesting dust and motion. The wheel represented civilization and movement. In 1923, engineers added a keyway to the gear wheel.

The Object of Rotary encourages service. It promotes high ethical standards. It advances international understanding. This ideal means being thoughtful and helpful. It applies to all endeavors.

Rotary has two mottoes. He Profits Most Who Serves Best was one of the first mottoes. Service Above Self is now the principal motto. It explains unselfish volunteer service.

The 4-Way Test is a statement of business ethics. Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created it in 1932. The test asks four questions. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Rotarians often use first names. This custom fosters friendship. In some Asian countries, members get nicknames. These nicknames often relate to their profession.

The Four Avenues of Service guide Rotary’s work. They include Club Service and Vocational Service. They also include Community Service and International Service.

Rotary urges tolerance of differences. Rotarians should avoid criticizing other countries’ customs. The organization promotes understanding and goodwill.

Vocational Service encourages high ethical standards. It also recognizes the dignity of all useful occupations. Rotary Anns is a term for wives of male members.

Rotary offers opportunities for fellowship. Members are encouraged to share Rotary. They should propose new members.

Rotary International has special months. February is World Understanding Month. October is Vocational Service Month. November is Rotary Foundation Month.

As you enjoy Rotary Field, remember the ideals it represents. Think about service, ethics, and international understanding. These are the values that Rotary promotes worldwide.
