“A school nestled by the woods?” That might be the first thought that comes to mind when you see the Waldparkschule. Let me tell you a story about this unique place.

The Waldparkschule in Heidelberg-Boxberg has a rich history. It all began in the 1950s with plans for the Waldparksiedlung. This new housing area needed a school. In 1962, the first residents moved in. School operations started in temporary buildings in early 1963. Finally, in November 1967, the Waldparkschule was officially inaugurated.

Initially, it served as a primary and secondary school. In the late 1990s, students could also pursue a Werkrealschulabschluss. A significant upgrade came in 1996 when the school’s gymnasium was converted into a multi-purpose hall.

The Waldparkschule further expanded its offerings in the mid to late 2000s. It received financial support to develop its all-day program. Despite declining student numbers in the secondary level, the city council decided against closing the school. Instead, they voted to transform it into a Gemeinschaftsschule or community school.

Since the summer of 2013, the Waldparkschule has been one of Heidelberg’s two Gemeinschaftsschulen. Student numbers tell a story of growth. From 194 students in 2011/12, the school grew to about 440 students in 2017/18.

The architecture of the Waldparkschule reflects the style of the 1960s. The buildings feature vertically aligned brickwork. You’ll notice continuous window and parapet surfaces. Concrete supports and horizontal accents add structure. The buildings have flat roofs.

Inside, classrooms have unique lighting. There are lower windows and additional clerestory windows above. The interior ceilings are sloped. The school buildings range from two to four stories. They include classrooms, specialized rooms, and administrative areas. The main building consists of five sections arranged around the school hall and a courtyard.

A separate building houses specialized classrooms. A covered bridge connects it to the main building and the gymnasium. Interestingly, the basement of the gymnasium is home to the “Holzwurm,” an evangelical youth center.

A modern addition is planned. In 2017, the decision was made to build a new school cafeteria. It will be located in the northern part of the grounds, next to the gymnasium.

The Waldparkschule offers a unique educational approach. Students are taught at different academic levels. They can achieve all three degrees here. Transitions to a Realschule or Gymnasium are possible. The school also integrates inclusive pedagogical approaches.

Students receive personalized learning. French is offered as a second language from grade 6. From grade 8, students can focus on science and technology, Spanish, or visual arts. The school uses Lego Mindstorms robots in science and technology classes. Even in primary school, personalized learning is encouraged.

The school day has a flexible start. Classes officially begin at 7:50 AM, but students can arrive until 8:30 AM. Classes end at 4:00 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Wednesdays and Fridays have shorter days. Grades 5 and 6 participate in cross-grade elective courses in the afternoons.

The Waldparkschule emphasizes personal development. Students have weekly coaching sessions with a teacher. They use a learning diary to track their progress. The school promotes social skills. It has a conflict resolution program and a student council in every class. Psychological support is available.

The school boasts a student-run library. Student companies manage a stationery shop and a catering service. Two trained school dogs are integrated into everyday school life.

The Waldparkschule has many partnerships. These include collaborations with the Sarah Wiener Foundation for healthy eating. The Lions Club supports the Klasse2000 project. There are also partnerships with the Musikschule Heidelberg. The school cooperates with the Heidelberger Kunstverein. Students attend performances at the Stadttheater Heidelberg.

The Waldparkschule was awarded the Deutscher Schulpreis in 2017. The jury praised the flexible start times and feedback culture. The award recognized the school’s commitment to individual student coaching.

The school’s artwork was created by Mehrdad Zaeri. He has a close relationship with the Waldparkschule through various collaborations. The Waldparkschule is more than just a school. It’s a community. It’s a place where students can learn, grow, and thrive.
