“Vacant for twenty years.” That’s how the story of Meilin Park Fangxiang District in Shenzhen begins. This park wasn’t always the green space it is today. Its transformation is a testament to community involvement and innovative design.
Meilin Park Fangxiang District sits in the northern part of Futian District. This area is known for its mix of urban villages and older industrial zones. For a long time, this particular plot of land was nothing more than a concrete floor surrounded by walls. It became a temporary parking lot and a dumping ground. Imagine the contrast. High-density Meilin needed green spaces. But this spot was an eyesore.
The land’s history is complex. Disputes between the owner and a developer led to its closure in 2000. The public facilities that were promised never materialized. This made the community wary of any new construction. The land sat idle.
Everything changed in 2019. Meilin Street launched the “Xiaomeisai Urban Micro Design Melin Action” competition. This competition brought together street agencies, community planners, designers, residents, and third-party consultants. Shenzhen Self-organized Space won first prize. They participated in the park’s design and construction.
The design of Meilin Park Fangxiang District focused on openness, ecology, and diversity. The walls were removed. This opened the park to the surrounding streets and communities. The existing concrete floor was broken up to allow the land to breathe again. This was a crucial step in establishing an ecological landscape. The broken concrete blocks were used to create a micro-topography. It became a cracked garden where plants and concrete coexisted. Children found a new playground.
The project was low-cost and low-maintenance. Old concrete blocks became landscape materials. Smaller fragments were used for drainage. Local tree species and wildflowers were chosen for planting.
Before the renovation, the site was deserted. Now, Meilin Park Fangxiang District buzzes with activity. Residents and passersby are drawn into the park. It offers space for socializing, relaxing, playing, and exercising. The park hosts regular events. Meilin Park Fangxiang District provides opportunities for everyone to enjoy a bit of peace. The wasteland has turned into an urban park. It has revitalized the surrounding community.
