Is it possible that a simple overheating air conditioner could rewrite the lives of hundreds? Here in Sambag II, it has happened. Sambag II is a barangay in Cebu City. It is a place of homes and families. In 2020, the population was 12,173. That’s about 1.26% of Cebu City’s total population. Imagine almost 600 people suddenly without a home.

In April 2024, a fire devastated Sambag II. The fire lasted seven hours. It left nearly 600 residents homeless and one injured. The blaze started from an overheating air conditioning unit. It spread quickly due to the closely packed houses and light materials. Sixty-eight fire engines rushed to Sambag II to battle the flames. The fire reached the 4th alarm.

The fire affected three sitios. These were Kalubihan, Grupa, and Riverside. Eighty-two houses were gutted. 167 families were displaced. They sought shelter at Cebu City Central School. The community rallied to provide aid. People donated food, clothes, and sleeping materials.

But this wasn’t an isolated incident. Earlier in January 2024, another fire struck Sambag II. This one left 84 people homeless. The fire started in a house on San Juan Street. Twenty-one structures were affected. Once again, the community opened its arms. The Maharlika gym became a temporary shelter. Donations poured in to help the affected families.

The barangay officials are trying to prevent future fires. Narrow roads hindered firefighters. The Cebu City Mayor ordered a reblocking of the area. This will create wider roads for better access. Despite these tragedies, the spirit of Sambag II remains strong. The people are resilient. They help each other in times of need. The Sangguniang Kabataan plays a vital role. They coordinate donations and assistance for fire victims. Sambag II stands as a reminder of community. It shows what people can do when they come together.
