“A thousand hands… can you imagine?” whispered a woman, clutching her husband’s arm as they approached Chùa Long Nhiễu. The air hummed with a quiet reverence. This wasn’t just a temple; it was a sanctuary, a testament to resilience. Chùa Long Nhiễu stood as a symbol of faith’s enduring power. The current structure, nestled at the foot of the hill, had witnessed a tumultuous past. The original temple, Đặng Long Tự, built in 1886, was a victim of a fierce storm just fourteen years later. The rebuilt Chùa Long Nhiễu later faced significant damage during the Vietnam War, requiring extensive restoration. Yet, like a lotus flower emerging from murky waters, it bloomed again. Entering the courtyard, visitors are greeted by a stone stupa, Tháp Giác Ngộ, commemorating the millennium. A mosaic dragon, crafted from ceramic and glass, shimmers behind a tranquil pond. The main hall beckons with ornate dragons adorning the banisters and a pair of k Kỳ lân guarding the entrance. Inside, a golden, lacquered statue of Quan Âm, the Bodhisattva of compassion, radiates serenity. Her thousand hands, each meticulously crafted, form a shimmering mandala. To the side, a depiction of the ten realms of existence offers a visual representation of the Buddhist journey. The modern feel of the hall is a testament to the ongoing restoration efforts, ensuring Chùa Long Nhiễu’s continued vitality as the headquarters of the Khánh Hòa Province Buddhist Association. A stairway of 152 stone steps ascends the hill, leading to the site of the original temple. Halfway up, a reclining Buddha rests in parinirvana, a unique image for Vietnam, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped this sacred space. At the summit, a colossal white Buddha sits in meditation, his gaze encompassing the city. This 14-meter statue, the tallest in Vietnam, stands as a powerful symbol of peace and resilience. The base of the statue bears witness to a darker chapter in Vietnamese history. Seven portraits of monks who self-immolated in protest against religious persecution during the Diệm regime are enshrined here, their faces framed by flames. These acts of sacrifice ultimately contributed to the regime’s downfall. From this vantage point, the panorama of Nha Trang unfolds, a city that has weathered its own storms. Chùa Long Nhiễu, with its blend of history, art, and spiritual significance, stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the power of faith and resilience in the face of adversity.
