The foundation stone. That’s where our journey into the heart of CSI St John’s Church begins. Right here in Chennai. This unassuming stone laid in 1840 marks the genesis of a place rich in history and faith. CSI St John’s Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to unwavering devotion. A testament to the enduring spirit of Christianity in this vibrant city.
For over a century and a half CSI St John’s Church has stood tall. It’s witnessed countless prayers. It’s offered solace to generations of worshippers. It’s a place where the echoes of hymns blend with the murmur of everyday life. In 1842 Reverend C Aroolappan consecrated this sacred space. He served for 18 years. His son continued the legacy as a lay reader for two years. Afterward the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) took over the church’s administration. The church’s growth was fueled by generous contributions from tenants and numerous donors.
One might not know that in 1953 the church celebrated its centenary. A souvenir was released. It reflected a deep-seated faith. The chosen verse from Psalm 107:1 echoed the gratitude and steadfast belief of its congregation. “O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good for His mercy endureth forever” These words ring true even today. They capture the essence of CSI St John’s Church. This enduring spirit of gratitude and faith.
Later in the 19th century a significant donation arrived. Bishop T Dealtry received 12000 rupees. This was a sacrificial offering from Meckenzie of Bengal. This generous gift was intended for the Bishop’s personal use. Yet he chose to donate it to St John’s Mission. This act of selflessness underscores the spirit of generosity that has always characterized this sacred place. CSI St John’s Church remains a beacon of hope and a haven for the faithful.
