“A church’s name can tell a story.” This is certainly true for Myungsung Presbyterian Church. Its name means “Voice of Myungil-dong”, a reflection of its deep roots in this Seoul neighborhood. Myungsung Presbyterian Church was founded in 1980. The area surrounding the church transformed from farmland and orchards to a large housing complex in the 1980s. This growth mirrored the church’s own expansion. Myungsung Presbyterian Church has become the largest Presbyterian church globally, boasting a membership exceeding 100,000. The church has expanded its reach significantly. It established over thirty church plants. These include Myungsung First Presbyterian Church in 2004 and Myungsung Second Presbyterian Church in 2006. Technology further extends its influence with an additional ten “screen” churches offering services via video. Dr. Kim Sam Whan, the church’s driving force for many years, now holds the title of emeritus pastor. His daughter, Pastor Kim Ha Na, leads the congregation as the current senior pastor. She continues the church’s mission under the mottos “Lord Only” and “Seven Year as One Day”. In 2012, a testament to the church’s growth, a new main sanctuary was constructed next to the original building. The church’s commitment to service extends internationally. In 2004, Myungsung Church opened the MCM (Myungsung Christian Medical Center) hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This hospital provides vital care to underserved local communities. Myungsung Church’s influence reaches far beyond its impressive physical presence. In 1990, Pastor Kim Sam Whan made history as the first South Korean Protestant pastor to visit the Soviet Union and Poland for worship missions. This visit demonstrated the church’s dedication to spreading its message across borders. Recently, the church launched the Myeongseong Eunpa Forum. This forum, commemorating Pastor Kim Sam-hwan’s 60 years of ministry, brings together experts from various fields to discuss the church’s social impact and future direction. Myungsung Presbyterian Church has a dynamic history, woven into the fabric of Seoul and extending its threads of faith across the world.
