Gazing at the Royal Palace, one can almost feel the weight of centuries pressing down. The Royal Palace of Madrid. A grand testament to Spanish royalty, standing proudly on the site of a former Moorish fortress. It is a place where history and legend intertwine, where the whispers of kings and the echoes of fires dance through the opulent halls. The Royal Palace of Madrid was built upon the ashes of the Alcázar, a royal residence that met a dramatic end on Christmas Eve of 1734. A devastating fire, said to have started in the rooms of the court painter Jean Ranc, consumed the old structure, leaving behind only remnants and stories. From the ashes of the Alcázar, King Philip V envisioned a new palace, a grand symbol of the Bourbon dynasty. Construction of the Royal Palace of Madrid began in 1738, a monumental undertaking that spanned nearly two decades. The palace finally opened its doors in 1764, welcoming King Charles III as its first resident. It’s said that during the construction of the Alcázar, before the fire, workers were plagued by eerie occurrences. Ghosts and witches, according to legend, haunted the grounds, causing misfortune and even death. The fall of the old Arab bastion only amplified these tales, with whispers of the fallen defenders’ cries echoing through the night. Even within the Alcázar’s walls, whispers of the supernatural persisted. King Charles II, known as “El Hechizado” (The Bewitched), was said to have been the victim of a goblin residing within the palace. This mischievous spirit, legend has it, offered the king a gruesome concoction: the brain of a dead man dissolved in chocolate! Another chilling tale tells of the Duke of Alba encountering a beautiful lady in the Alcázar’s chapel, only to discover her true form as Death itself, scythe in hand. While the old Alcázar is gone, the Royal Palace of Madrid carries its own set of stories. Architect Filippo Juvara, commissioned by King Philip V, met a grim fate, according to legend. The king, consumed by envy and fear that Juvara might create a grander palace elsewhere, ordered the architect’s hands to be cut off and his eyes gouged out. Juvara, in a final act of defiance, is said to have unleashed goblins and demons upon the palace walls, prompting the king to order an exorcism. Queen Isabel de Farnesio, wife of Philip V, had a disturbing dream that forever changed the palace’s appearance. She envisioned Madrid ravaged by an earthquake, with herself buried beneath one of the 108 statues of monarchs that once adorned the Royal Palace of Madrid. As a result, the statues were removed, only to reappear in various locations across Madrid centuries later. Today, as you stand before the Royal Palace of Madrid, imagine the ghosts of these stories swirling amidst its grandeur. The cries of fallen defenders, the laughter of mischievous goblins, and the weight of royal ambition all contribute to the palace’s mystique, making it not just a building, but a living testament to the intricate tapestry of history and legend.
