Gazing out at the shimmering expanse of Coronado City Beach, can you envision a time before the iconic Hotel del Coronado graced this landscape? Coronado City Beach, a jewel of San Diego, has a rich history that stretches back centuries before it became a popular tourist destination. Long before the arrival of European explorers, the Kumeyaay people called this area home, sustaining fishing villages along these shores. Traces of their presence, such as shell mounds and arrowheads, have been unearthed, whispering tales of a time long past. Coronado City Beach wasn’t always known by its current name. In 1602, Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino sailed past the Coronado Islands, naming them “Las Yslas Coronadas.” It was from these islands that Coronado City Beach eventually borrowed its name, becoming known as “Coronado,” meaning “crowned.” The transformation of Coronado City Beach began in 1885. A group of businessmen, Elisha Babcock Jr., Hampton Story, and Jacob Gruendike, purchased the entire peninsula for $110,000. Their vision was to create a grand resort community, a vision that would forever alter the destiny of Coronado City Beach. In just a few short years, their ambitious plans began to take shape. The Coronado Beach Company was formed in 1886, and construction began on the magnificent Hotel del Coronado. Imagine the excitement as the hotel, the largest resort hotel in the world at that time, opened its doors in 1888. Coronado City Beach quickly blossomed into a fashionable destination, drawing visitors from near and far. The beach wasn’t the only attraction. The Coronado Beach Company also built a dance pavilion and bandstand right here at Coronado City Beach, offering free concerts. A street railway system was constructed, and a steam-powered ferry, the Coronado, began shuttling people across the bay. Even ostriches played a role in Coronado City Beach’s early history. E.J. Johnson established an ostrich farm, a peculiar blend of tourist attraction and feather source. By the turn of the century, John D. Spreckels, son of the “Sugar King,” had acquired the Coronado Beach Company’s holdings, solidifying his influence over Coronado City Beach. He introduced Tent City, a unique community of tents and cottages just south of the Hotel del Coronado. It became a beloved vacation spot for families, adding another layer to Coronado City Beach’s vibrant tapestry. Over the years, Coronado City Beach has witnessed the ebb and flow of history. From the arrival of the Navy’s “Great White Fleet” in 1908 to the groundbreaking aviation experiments of Glenn Curtiss on North Island in 1911, Coronado City Beach has played a role in significant events. The construction of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge in 1969 further connected Coronado City Beach to the mainland. As you stand here, on the sands of Coronado City Beach, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet. From the Kumeyaay fishermen to the visionaries who built the Hotel del Coronado, this beach holds within its sands the echoes of generations past.
