“Hey Ram” These words are etched in stone here at Raj Ghat. They were Mahatma Gandhi’s last words. This is a place of profound significance. Raj Ghat marks the spot where the Father of the Nation was cremated. It happened on January 31 1948.

Raj Ghat loosely translates to Royal Steps. The word “royal” alludes to the importance of this place. “Steps” references the climb from the banks of the Yamuna River.

Imagine this area in 1948. It was a historic ghat in Shahjahanabad. It sat on the west bank of the Yamuna River east of Daryaganj. Today Raj Ghat is a serene memorial complex in Delhi.

The first memorial at Raj Ghat was dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. A black marble platform marks his cremation spot. An eternal flame burns at one end. A stone footpath leads to the walled enclosure that houses the memorial.

The memorial’s design reflects Gandhi’s values. It embodies simplicity humility and inclusivity. The open-to-sky platform and eternal flame endure his legacy.

The design was crafted by Vanu G Bhuta. He was an American-trained architect. He sought the influence of the mandala pattern. The memorial is at the nucleus of a sunken square courtyard. Four ramps stretch out towards each cardinal direction.

The gardens create a peaceful backdrop. Labeled trees were planted by esteemed personalities. Queen Elizabeth II and USA President Dwight D Eisenhower are among them. Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh also planted a tree here.

Raj Ghat’s political significance is unparalleled in India’s history. This sanctuary illuminates the guiding principles of unity and social equality. These principles steered the nation’s journey toward freedom.

VIPs foreign dignitaries and travelers pay homage to Gandhi here. They lay flowers on the platform. The memorial’s ambience echoes Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy.

Raj Ghat is not just Gandhi’s memorial. It has expanded to include memorials for other leaders. Jawaharlal Nehru has a memorial called Shantivan. Lal Bahadur Shastri’s memorial is Vijay Ghat. Indira Gandhi’s memorial is Shakti Sthal. These memorials honor their contributions to India.

In 2000 the government decided not to create separate memorials for all leaders. The existing memorials occupied too much prime land in Delhi. This decision preserves space while honoring many.

Visiting Raj Ghat evokes feelings of cultural and spiritual value. Gandhi’s ideals and simplicity are reflected in the design. As you walk through the garden pathways take in the serene environment. Feel the deep reverence and inspiration. Embrace the spirit of equality. Strive for a better future.
