It’s also known as Mushi-hachiman because it was believed to have the power to expel harmful insects thought to cause illness in babies.
The shrine’s history stretches back to 859. Ono no Imoko a prominent figure who traveled to the Sui court in China built it. Legend says he fell ill during his journey. He prayed at Usa Hachimangu Shrine for recovery. His successful mission and subsequent return led him to establish Miyake Hachimangu Shrine in gratitude. This isn’t just a tale. Large ema votive tablets depicting prayers for protection from insects have been excavated. They’re even designated as National Folk Cultural Properties.

You will see the same motif repeated. You can even buy clay doves to place at home. Return them to the shrine when your children grow up. Even today many people visit to pray for their children’s health and well-being. The shrine has an autumn festival a Shichigosan festival and a Hatsumode New Year’s Day celebration.
