Has anyone ever told you about the brave Roman officer who became the patron saint of firefighters? Here at the St. Florian Chapel in Cebu City, that very saint is honored. St. Florian Chapel, a place of reverence, reminds us of a man who stood by his faith amidst persecution. Florian, born around 250 A.D., wasn’t always a saint. He was a high-ranking Roman officer in Noricum, modern-day Austria, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. Florian was tasked with organizing firefighting brigades. He was known for his efficiency and bravery. However, Diocletian’s reign was a dark time for Christians. Persecution was rampant. When ordered to persecute Christians, Florian refused. He had secretly converted to Christianity. He openly confessed his faith. This act of defiance enraged the Roman authorities. He was sentenced to death. One account says he was burned at the stake. Another tells of him being drowned in the River Enns with a millstone around his neck. Despite the brutality of his execution, Florian’s story didn’t end there. Legends tell of miracles attributed to him, like extinguishing a large fire with just a single bucket of water. This cemented his status as the protector against fire.
