His legacy lives here in East Jerusalem. Nestled within his former mansion. This building now houses the Issaf Nashashibi Center for Culture and Literature.
Imagine the vibrant salons once held within these walls. The murmur of conversation. The clinking of teacups. Issaf Nashashibi himself a towering figure of intellect and eloquence. He was a renowned scholar a prolific writer. A defender of classical Arabic in a time of change. His books were treasures. Sadly many were looted after his death during the 1948 Nakba. Thousands of books vanished. Almost 6000 ended up in the National Library labeled as “abandoned property.” A cruel irony for such a dedicated scholar.
But the spirit of Issaf Nashashibi perseveres. His legacy found new life in 1982. Ishaq al-Husseini established a research center here. A haven for scholarship and culture. Thousands of manuscripts and rare books found refuge within these walls. The Center’s initial aspiration was to serve scholars throughout Palestine. Sadly restrictions on Palestinian movement hampered this goal. The Center adapted. It transitioned into a vibrant cultural hub for East Jerusalem residents. This was crucial. There are only two public libraries in East Jerusalem. Compare that to 26 in West Jerusalem. The disparity was stark.
Since 1997 the Center has flourished. Renovations revitalized the building. Organizational systems were modernized. Preservation efforts began to safeguard priceless collections. Today the Issaf Nashashibi Center pulsates with life. It hosts poetry readings art exhibitions music concerts lectures. A celebration of Arab heritage and culture thrives within its walls. This beautiful building is a testament to resilience and the enduring power of culture. It’s a beacon of hope a symbol of enduring memory. A reminder of a scholar’s unwavering commitment to language and learning. A place where Issaf Nashashibi’s spirit lives on.
