Beneath your feet lies ground steeped in over seven centuries of history a history connected to Güterfelde. This is a village with a story that stretches back to the medieval era. We are here to uncover some of the hidden layers of Güterfelde.

Güterfelde began its story in 1263. It was first documented as Jutergotz. The name comes from a Polabian form meaning “place of a Jutrogost”. Jutro means morning or dawn. Gost means guest. Over time, the name was misinterpreted. People thought it meant “morning idol”.

For centuries, Güterfelde was a small farming village. It sat on an old trade route from Leipzig to Berlin. This road passed right through the village center. In 1411, Magdeburgian robber knights plundered Güterfelde. The village struggled to recover from this attack.

In 1804, a manor house was built here. David Gilly designed it in the Neoclassical style. Albrecht von Roon later remodeled the manor house. He gave it a Baroque Revival style. In 1893, the city of Berlin bought the manor. It became a children’s tuberculosis sanatorium.

The village changed its name in 1937. Gütergotz became Güterfelde. This change happened during the Nazi era. The Nazis tried to remove Slavic names from places. After World War II, the mayor tried to change the name back. However, the name Güterfelde stuck.

After the war, the former manor lands were redistributed. This broke up the large agricultural estates. In 1953, farmers formed an agricultural cooperative. This cooperative later merged with another one.

From 1952 to 2010, the manor house served as a nursing home. Later, it was converted into apartments. Güterfelde became part of Stahnsdorf in 2002.

The village church is a fieldstone church from the 13th century. The church was renovated in 1867. A memorial to World War I stands next to the church.

Today, Güterfelde has a unique coat of arms. The coat of arms symbolizes the village’s history. Red and silver represent the village’s name. Red symbolizes the morning dawn. A swan represents the lake. A pine cone represents the Kienwerder area.

As we stand here in Güterfelde it is important to remember the past. Its unique name changes and evolution from Gutergotz to a modern community makes it a very special place.
