Rows of simple white headstones stretch before us. This is Fauquissart Military Cemetery. A poignant testament to the sacrifices made during the First World War. It lies near Laventie a town close to Armentieres in the Pas de Calais region of France.

Fauquissart Military Cemetery holds a special place in history. Established in November 1914 it served as a burial ground for soldiers. Primarily those of the 8th Division. It was used until June 1915.

Within this quiet resting place lie 105 British soldiers. Many gave their lives during the fierce battles of the Western Front. Nineteen remain unidentified. Their names lost to time. Yet special memorials honor three soldiers known to be among the unknown. These brave men fought for their country. They lie here in Fauquissart Military Cemetery. Their stories remain etched in the headstones.

One such soldier was Corporal Arthur Doe of the 2nd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment. He died on January 1st 1915 aged 28. His headstone bears the simple inscription “Thy Will Be Done”. Another was Private Isaac Lamb. He was only 23 when he perished on November 27th 1914. His final resting place is marked in Row A 1. Their lives were cut short. Their stories however echo through the years. Their sacrifice is not forgotten.

Access to Fauquissart Military Cemetery is possible. Though wheelchair access is difficult. It is situated on the north-west side of the D171 road. It is between Fleurbaix and Neuve Chapelle.
