Isn’t it striking how a single bust can encapsulate a nation’s history? Right here in Lille stands the Buste de Charles de Gaulle. It is more than a sculpture. It is a tribute to a towering figure.

This bronze Buste de Charles de Gaulle watches over visitors. It has been in the courtyard of Charles de Gaulle’s birthplace for almost 40 years. The house was inaugurated in November 1983 by Pierre Mauroy. Mauroy was the Prime Minister and Mayor of Lille at the time.

A small ceremony unveiled the stele. It was installed at 9 Rue Princesse. The sculpture represents General de Gaulle’s head. It is fixed to a granite base.

The granite has a unique story. It comes from the Sein Island lighthouse. The Germans destroyed it in the summer of 1944. This was to honor the sailors who responded to de Gaulle’s call on June 18. Sculptor André Journet created the head in 1972. People consider it faithful and expressive.

In anticipation of opening Charles de Gaulle’s birthplace to the public, a copy was created. The lost-wax method was used. This took place at the Fondation de Coubertin in 1982. The artist’s signature and the series number are under the left ear. The Fondation de Coubertin’s mark is on the nape of the neck.

This Buste de Charles de Gaulle is one of eight casts. Three other copies are in specific locations. These include the historic office of the Ministry of Defense. Another is at the entrance of the Charles de Gaulle Foundation in Paris. The last one is on the aircraft carrier named after him.

In 2020, a specialist in metal artworks restored the sculpture. The Buste de Charles de Gaulle regained its brilliance. The cleaning removed alterations caused by 37 years of bad weather.

The Buste de Charles de Gaulle is a reminder of his impact. Charles de Gaulle was born in Lille in 1890. He died in 1970. He was a military leader, a resistant, and a statesman. De Gaulle was also a writer. He led Free France. He headed the French Committee of National Liberation during World War II. From 1959 to 1969, he served as President of the French Republic.

Looking at the Buste de Charles de Gaulle, remember the man. Remember his dedication and his influence on France. This sculpture is not just a work of art. It is a piece of French history.
