Founded in 1852 Leinster Cricket Club boasts a rich history. Initially located in Grosvenor Square the club moved to its present Observatory Lane home in 1865. This wasn’t just a cricket club. Oh no. This was the heart of Dublin sporting life.
Leinster Cricket Club wasn’t just about cricket. In 1913 Leinster Bowling Club joined. Then in 1925 the Tennis Club arrived making Leinster a truly multi-sports hub. Ladies became associate members for the first time. The 1940s saw the rise of the Table Tennis Club. The Squash Club followed in 1969.
The club’s Observatory Lane ground is more than just a sports facility. It played a role in Irish sporting history hosting Ireland’s first rugby union home game in 1875. Lansdowne Road was deemed unfit for the occasion. This fascinating ground also welcomed the All-England XI for their first Irish visit in 1860. W G Grace himself first played on Irish soil here in 1873.
Leinster Cricket Club holds the record for most Leinster Senior League titles a remarkable 23 wins. The club continues to thrive with eight men’s teams three women’s teams and fifteen youth teams. Its impressive grounds include six tennis courts a bowling green squash courts and table tennis facilities. Beyond sports the club offers a bar meeting rooms and a function room available for hire.
