In the heart of Osaka, Yagumo Shrine stands as a testament to resilience and faith. Yagumo Shrine’s origins trace back to a time of widespread disease. In 870, during the reign of Emperor Seiwa, epidemics ravaged Japan. Prayers for relief were sent out from the Gion Shrine in Kyoto, now known as Yasaka Shrine. Seven branch shrines were established across the country. Yagumo Shrine became one of these beacons of hope. A government official, Masanao Morita, led the prayers for the end of the pestilence. He established the shrine on Matsugashima Island. Years later, in 1588, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi constructed Osaka Castle, Yagumo Shrine was moved to its current location. The shrine was initially known by several names, including Gozu Tenno Sha, Matsuzaka Tenno Sha, and Gion Sha. It was during the Meiji era that it was officially renamed Yagumo Shrine. In 1908, Yagumo Shrine merged with eleven other local shrines, solidifying its presence in the community. The main hall of Yagumo Shrine exhibits a unique architectural style called the “three-bay shrine style”. Unlike other structures in the area, its central pillars don’t have connecting beams, a rare feature in the Kita River area. The shrine’s autumn festival is a vibrant spectacle. Five decorated floats, each representing a different village, converge at the shrine. This colorful procession is a treasured piece of local folk culture.
