“Ready to witness history etched in stone and steel?” Today we stand before Di tích Pháo đài Láng. It is a place where the echoes of war and resilience resonate.
Di tích Pháo đài Láng is more than just a relic. It is a symbol of Hanoi’s indomitable spirit. It marks the beginning of the nation’s fight against French colonialism.
In 1940, the French built Pháo đài Láng. They used locals from Láng Trung village for labor. The aim was to defend against the looming threat of Japanese invasion. The fortress had three 75mm cannons. Later one broke leaving two operational.
By 1945, the Japanese had seized the fortress. After the August Revolution, Vietnamese forces took control. They quickly mastered the cannons’ operation. These cannons became crucial for the coming conflict.
Fast forward to December 19th, 1946. Hanoi plunged into darkness as the power plant was destroyed. At 8:03 PM, Pháo đài Láng fired its first shots. These shots signaled the start of the Toàn quốc kháng chiến. Other fortresses joined in.
The next day, French planes bombed the city. The soldiers at Pháo đài Láng shot down a French aircraft on December 21st, 1946. It was the first time a French plane was destroyed over Hanoi. General Võ Nguyên Giáp praised the soldiers.
After 60 days of fierce fighting, Pháo đài Láng fulfilled its mission. It helped delay the enemy advance. This allowed the Vietnamese people to prepare for a long war. In January 1947, the order came to destroy the cannons and retreat.
Today, Pháo đài Láng stands as a national historic site. It was officially recognized in 1993. A single cannon remains on display. It stands as a testament to Hanoi’s courage.
The site also features a museum. Inside, you’ll find models of old Hanoi. There are lists of soldiers who fought here. You can see weapons used by the self-defense forces. Among them are three-pronged bombs and artillery shells.
Pháo đài Láng inspires patriotism. It teaches the young about bravery. It shows the strength and pride of those who defended their country.
The street leading to the fortress is named Pháo Đài Láng. This honors the soldiers’ and citizens’ valiant efforts. Though urban development surrounds it. Di tích Pháo đài Láng remains.
Considered as a landmark, one can see one of the two cannons exhibited. It serves as a reminder of the call to “Quyết tử để Tổ quốc quyết sinh”. This means “Die for the Fatherland to live”. It embodies the spirit of Hanoi’s defenders. The area spans about 500 square meters. It features green spaces with trees and flowers. It is managed by the Hanoi Department of Heritage Management.
