CornerStone Assembly of God

In 1982 a small church began in a living room. Les and Clarice Bishop started Home Missions Church. Janice Porter was one of the early members. The church later became Creation Assembly of God. It moved several times. Les and Clarice Bishop resigned in 1986. Membership declined. Pastor Jack Briggs and his family took over. The church was renamed Newton Assembly of God. Through prayer the church grew to 35 attendees. The church moved again to Burr Elementary in Newton. The congregation became more diverse with an increase in Filipino members. In 1990 CornerStone Assembly of God was formed. The church leased space at Whittemore’s Christian Bookstore in Needham. The congregation was incorporated in 1991. By 1995 CornerStone Assembly of God had around 120 members from various nationalities. Sadly Ernie a great leader passed away that year. The bookstore closed. CornerStone Assembly of God had to find a new location. They moved to the Greendale Avenue Worship Center. Four congregations shared the space. CornerStone Assembly of God’s Sunday service was moved to 5 pm. This affected attendance. Pastor Jack asked Pastor Kenneth Villaluz to be an assistant pastor. Pastor Jack had health problems. He relied on Pastor Ken. Membership dropped to 50 then slowly grew to around 75. Pastor Jack retired in 2013. Pastor Ken became the lead pastor. He led the church through difficult transitions. CornerStone Assembly of God moved again in 2019. They leased space at Grace Lutheran Church in Needham. The COVID-19 pandemic struck. Pastor Ken resigned to care for family members. Pastor Robson and his wife Mary moved from Maine to help. Pastor Ken moved to Texas. Pastor Robson served as interim pastor. On June 27 2021 Pastor Robson became the lead pastor of CornerStone Assembly of God. In 2023 Grace Lutheran Church sold their building. CornerStone Assembly of God moved again to their current location. Through many challenges the faithfulness of God has been evident. Christ is indeed the cornerstone.
