Gazing up at the elegant facade of Saint Timothy Catholic Church, one might hear whispers of Hollywood’s golden age. Saint Timothy Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It intertwines with the glitz and glamour of the nearby film studios. The parish was founded in 1943. Initially, Mass was celebrated in a humble ice cream parlor on Pico Boulevard. Imagine the scent of waffle cones mingling with the solemnity of prayer. A temporary church, now the parish hall, was dedicated in 1945. The current Spanish Renaissance style church, designed by Harold Gimeno, opened on Christmas 1949. A striking feature of Saint Timothy Catholic Church is its antique gold leaf Spanish altarpiece. Its origins before 1900 are shrouded in mystery, but it’s believed to be 17th-century Spanish craftsmanship. Its journey to Los Angeles is a tale in itself. It traveled from a church in Spain to Yucatán, Mexico, where it was confiscated by the government. Later, it surfaced in the hands of a New York art dealer. In the 1920s, someone associated with the Doheny Oil Company purchased it. It remained in storage until the 1940s. Then, a representative of Saint Timothy’s acquired it at auction. Two statues, of the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, grace Saint Timothy Catholic Church. They once resided at Twentieth Century Fox Studios, appearing in the 1946 film “The Jolson Story.” The church’s connection to the film industry runs deep. Parishioners who were artisans at MGM and Fox studios contributed their skills. The ornate gold-plated tabernacle is a testament to the craftsmanship of MGM’s special effects department. The pews in the nave were crafted by carpenters from the Fox woodshop during a studio strike. Even the pulpit’s decorative base boasts a connection to the legendary William Randolph Hearst. Over the years, Saint Timothy Catholic Church has continued to evolve. Bishop John J. Ward, who served as pastor for an unusual thirty years, oversaw the addition of a mosaic wall behind the main altar. The church also boasts 67 stained glass windows, mostly crafted in Ireland by the Clark firm. Saint Timothy’s legacy extends beyond its walls. In 1958, the parish established St. Timothy School, originally run by the Sisters of Notre Dame. As you stand before Saint Timothy Catholic Church, remember that this is not just a place of worship. It is a repository of stories, a testament to community, and a reflection of the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles.
