Why do millions gather annually at the Big Jamarah in Mecca? It’s a question whispered on the winds of the desert, carried on the lips of countless pilgrims. The Big Jamarah stands as a stark, imposing wall in Mina, just east of Mecca. This isn’t just any wall. It’s a monument to resistance, a symbol of defiance against temptation. The Big Jamarah, also known as Al-Jamrah Al-Aqaba, plays a central role in the Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage. During the Stoning of the Devil ritual, pilgrims hurl pebbles at this wall and two others, reenacting Abraham’s symbolic rejection of Satan’s temptations. Imagine Abraham, facing the ultimate test of faith, commanded by God to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Three times, the devil attempted to sway him from his divine path. Three times, Abraham resisted, pelting the devil with stones to drive him away. The Big Jamarah embodies this struggle. On Eid al-Adha, pilgrims cast seven pebbles at the Big Jamarah, a visceral act echoing Abraham’s defiance. Originally, the jamarat were pillars. However, due to safety concerns and increasing pilgrim numbers, they were replaced with 26-meter walls in 2004. This transformation allowed for the construction of the Jamaraat Bridge, a multi-tiered structure that enables a greater number of pilgrims to participate safely in the ritual.
