The scent of freshly baked Kuchen wafts through the air. It’s a sweet invitation to step inside the Dorfkate Falkenberg. This charming building is more than just a cafe. It’s a living testament to Berlin’s past.
The Dorfkate is unique. It’s the only remaining clay-built house in all of Berlin. Built around 1820 it boasts the typical “black kitchens” a hallmark of its time. Since 1978 this little gem stands protected as a historical monument. Its original layout and the rustic mix of brick and clay construction remain untouched. This remarkable preservation speaks to its enduring importance.
Imagine the lives lived within these walls. Eight farmworker families once called this place home. Each family shared a cozy 21-square-meter living room a smaller 11-square-meter bedroom and a segment of the shared “black kitchen.” These kitchens were more than just cooking spaces. They were storage areas for food tools and sometimes even clothing. The kitchen was accessed via the hallway a detail that speaks volumes about daily life here.
The Dorfkate wasn’t always a cafe. After a fire in 1850 the house was rebuilt and modernized in 1856. Gable rooms were added for single workers sometimes called bachelors’ quarters. Floors were installed ovens added and the kitchens gained ceilings and proper cooking facilities. This improved structure endured World War I and II. It even remained occupied until the 1970s.
Sadly by 1992 neglect had set in. The yard was paved over the windows bricked up. Then in 1997 the Landschaftspark Nordost association stepped in saving the Dorfkate from demolition. After extensive renovation the Dorfkate was reopened in 2002. Even a small fire two weeks before the official opening couldn’t stop its resurrection.
Today the Dorfkate stands proud. It acts as an information center for the Barnim Heath regional park. The Cafe Lehmsofa serves delicious Canadian-inspired meals and cakes baked fresh daily.
